Pronouncing the words fleeing, migrant or refugee crisis will most commonly provoke the impetus of an intrinsic riot. On the one hand the overrepresentation in media coverage triggered this premature reaction, but on the other hand flight is simply an uncomfortable topic in a modern society, where accustomed living conditions always seems to be secure. Being on the run represents the most archaic lifestyle, out of which human society has grown by becoming settled and being a refugee means to emerge from this security and to experience human struggle first hand. This FLIGHT INTO THE UNKNOWN either guides to safe haven or cuts a corner and restores despair.
Celebrities such as Ai Wei Wei highlights that this major issue has not dropped the art world. Hereof stoerpunkt, gallery for contemporary art, wants to enter the current discourse shepherded by committed artists. Out of 353 candidacies, we have chosen ten outstanding works, which are approaching the topic in a variety of ways and with a wealth of different media. The artworks can be considered as contemporary documents, which express consternation of an entire generation. With the support of the Uno-Flüchtlingshilfe and the Refugio-München, we want to give these voices, which are documenting, criticizing, explaining, telling and urging to not close one's mind to this socio-political problem, an auditorium.
